Die Abenteuer silent film

The first film ever based on an Agatha Christie story was Die Abenteur released in 1928. Made by a German production company, it was an adaptation of The Secret Adversary – and was released in the UK under the name Adventurers Inc. The following year The Passing of Mr Quin was released; directed by Julius Hagen it was based on the short story The Coming of Mr Quin. Stewart Rome played the part of Quin in this silent movie. He was a well known British actor of the time, who in 1915, had been voted second to Chaplin in a Pictures magazine popularity poll.

This was only the beginning - there have been over thirty feature films made out of Christie's work, including And then there were none (1945) remade in 1965, 1974 and 1989, five Miss Marple films and six Poirot films.

Some of the most recent films were produced in France by Pascal Thomas and featured Tommy and Tuppence as played by Catherine Frot and André Dussollier: Mon petit doigt m'a dit (based on By the Pricking of my thumbs) 2005, Le crime est notre affaire (based on 4.50 from Paddington) 2008 and a film based on Nemesis which is in production as of spring 2011. 2007 saw the release of both Pascal Thomas' l'heure Zero (based on Towards Zero) and Pascal Bonitzer's Le Grand Alibi, based on The Hollow.

At Cannes 2011, Brilliant Films announced production of a film of Crooked House, one of Christie's darkest novels, with script by Julian Fellowes of Downton Abbey and Gosford Park. And with rumours of a young Miss Marple film by Disney, it looks as though Christie will continue to be a success on the big screen for many years to come!
