Synopsis

Thirty years ago, a house was inhabited by a man and his young son. One day the man travelled to London, was recognised as a criminal and shot himself. Whatever happened to his young son?

This eerie tale from Christie includes some lines from Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam:

Asking, "What Lamp had Destiny to guide

Her little Children stumbling in the Dark?"

And, "A blind understanding!" Heav'n replied.

This short story was first published in The Hound of Death and Other Stories in 1933 and also in The Golden Ball and Other Stories.
