There are a lot of items that aren't used. The German homing beacon is a plot point, used only to emphasize the subplot that Anthony Marston was a Nazi spy and that the Germans were interested in taking over Shipwreck Island to assist in their conquest of Britain. The cheese isn't used, you only need the cheesecloth for the fruit press. I never needed the ink pad. I assumed it was for fingerprints, but you only need the cellophane tape, the cards, and a turkey baster filled with flour for those. There are a few hidden clues in the projector room: experiment with lights and screen positions to see them! I don't know that the rusty cage has any purpose.
