Marple Actors

Here's a section to discuss Marple actors... Personally, I like Geraldine McEwan the most. Although I prefer Angela Lansbury as an actor in general, I don't really think she suits the part of Miss Marple as well as McEwan. Though I must say, I loved Lansbury in Death on the Nile!

I think Joan Hickson was the best Miss Marple. I just received a cd of the Tuesday Club Murders and was so happy she was the one reading it. She has such a melodious voice. Just love her.

Pipe dreams often come true Tommy so I hope you get to visit the other side of the world, albeit not necessarily as soon as you would have wished.

Tommy - I can highly recommend a trip to Oz. My twin brother lives in Auckland (New Zealand) and when I visit we meet up in Sydney and spend a week touring the sights (The Opera House & the Harbour Bridge are simply a-mazing !) then fly onto NZ for some more time together. Sydney is a vibrant and exciting city and I could very easily live there. Hope you get to visit for yourself. It's a vast country and so much to see but I've only had the good fortunate to see Sydney. I can also recommend New Zealand - I have seen most of both the North & South islands and it is a truly beautiful country. The Kiwis (and the Wallabies) are so welcoming. Do go !!

McEwan is my favorite. McKenzie is good but I like Geraldine McEwan in the part better. In my mind she fits the part better.

Pauline Collins plays the Female Sluth in the Updated version of Sparkling Cyanide Oliver Ford Davies plays her Husband and is supposed to be Race but they Changed the name, Pauline Collins was also in Upstairs Downstairs and the First series of Liver Birds She would make an nexcellent older Tuppence if the other books were done and Francessca Annis didn't want to do it. Maggie Smith Turned down the role of Miss Marple either by choice or because of Harry Potter.

Awesome :D Now I want a dictaphone!!!

Joan Hickson is pretty good; but I still like Julia McKenzie and Geraldine McEwan the best. I don't really like Margaret Rutherford - she just really doesn't suit the part! Who is Pauline Collins? I really think Maggie Smith should play Marple (she is old enough now and I think she suits it very well.)

Anita_Clue-avatar
Anita_Clue 27 Oct 11 at 5:02 p.m. GMT

Joan Hickson is my favorite, but Julia McKenzie is catching up -- especially after watching "The Pale Horse".  Pauline Collins was in that episode and she ranks as one of my favorite actresses.

brendamonks-avatar
brendamonks 27 Oct 11 at 3:56 p.m. GMT

Joan Hickson is my fabourite Marple.  She appeared in the BBC versions of a great many novels and anyone who subsequently played that part (McKenzie and McEwan) I naturally tended to compare with Hickson's interpretation.  I do also love Margaret Rutherford's characterisation in the black and white version of four of the novels...made I believe well before Hickson took on the mantle.

Well, you have no idea how many times I've scrapped and started again! I used to write heaps and I just wrote for fun, and when my story turned into something, I decided I want to send it to a publisher (I will do so next week or so)

Don't give up :D Ideas will come eventually. Everyone can write! I'm sure your writing is great!!!!

Tommy_A_Jones-avatar
Tommy_A_Jones 24 Oct 11 at 11:34 a.m. GMT

If you are asking me, I tried when I was younger, I had all sorts of sleuths, men, women, young, old, Duo's and Trio's, I had ideas for Professional Policemen but just created names although I did start to co-write a short story but the other person became unwell, she is O.K. now but we haven't returned to it, I started to write something on my own on my Computor but the Computor broke and  lost it all and haven't got round to it again.

I also started to write a Non Murder Mystery Play but get side-tracked.

I would love to think I had the skill to write but don't think I have.

I think I saw the BBC version with Joan Hickson.

Cool- where do u buy audio versions??

Tommy_A_Jones-avatar
Tommy_A_Jones 20 Oct 11 at 3:04 p.m. GMT

I also have an Audio Cassette version with June Whitfield as Miss Marple and Ian Lavender as Inspector Craddock who has been played by Charles Tingwell (The Film), John Castle (BBC) and John Hannah (ITV)

Tommy_A_Jones-avatar
Tommy_A_Jones 20 Oct 11 at 1:18 p.m. GMT

There have been three versions, the Film Murder She Said and a BBC version with Joan Hickson amd an ITV version with Geraldine McKewan, my favourite is the Joan Hickson version.

de_misteri-avatar
de_misteri 20 Oct 11 at 4:33 a.m. GMT

Oh, I have seen the tv version of 4 50 from Paddington but I don't think it was Margaret Rutherford.

Tommy_A_Jones-avatar
Tommy_A_Jones 19 Oct 11 at 2:45 p.m. GMT

Murder She Said is based on 4.50 From Paddington and also has Joan Hickson

Murder At The Gallop is based on the Poirot story After The Funeral

Murder Most Fowl is based on the Poirot Story Mrs McGinty's Dead

Murder Ahoy is not based on any AC Novel

Which ones are Margaret Rutherford in?

Tommy_A_Jones-avatar
Tommy_A_Jones 18 Oct 11 at 11:05 a.m. GMT

There has been one version of They Do It With Mirrors with Joan Hickson and another with Julia McKenzie. The Films with Margaret Rutherford were enjoyable and Fun but not to be taken too seriously

de_misteri-avatar
de_misteri 18 Oct 11 at 1:13 a.m. GMT

Really? Wow! She would have made good Miss Marple if she accepted the role.

Oh yeah, Joan Hickson is good too, isn't she in They do it with Mirrors? Or is that Geraldine McEwan? I think Margaret Rutherford is the wrong choice for a Miss Marple; she looks to Nursing-home-ish.

Tommy_A_Jones-avatar
Tommy_A_Jones 17 Oct 11 at 12:53 p.m. GMT

Apparently Maggie Smith Turned down the role, wether it was because of her role in the Harry Potter Films or wether she just didn't want the role I don't know.

I love the Joan Hickson Series, If you get a chance to see them I wouldjump at it if I were you.

de_misteri-avatar
de_misteri 16 Oct 11 at 1:05 a.m. GMT

Rosemary Leach could too; she did do an episode in Midsomer Murders - and she looks the part of Miss Marple IMHO. Maybe Maggie Smith; she's done Christie movies before and I think she could be the next Miss Marple (if they do more versions).

Joan Hickson's all right too, though I haven't seen as much of her... I think all the Marple actors are pretty good.

Tommy_A_Jones-avatar
Tommy_A_Jones 15 Oct 11 at 1:55 p.m. GMT

I did at one point think Rosemary Leach could too but perhaps not.

de_misteri-avatar
de_misteri 14 Oct 11 at 8:59 p.m. GMT

Yes, Angela Thorne could possibly play Miss Marple...

Tommy_A_Jones-avatar
Tommy_A_Jones 14 Oct 11 at 2:51 p.m. GMT

When reading the Books I have only visualised Geraldine McKewan during the First paragraph of Body In The Library when she sits up suddenly when the Phone goes, sometimes I visualise June Whitfield and sometimes Joan Hickson but more often I visualise Patricia Garwood (No Place Like Home) or Angela Thorne (To The Manor Born) neither have payed Miss Marple though, I would be interested to know if they were ever on ITVs shortlist for paying her.

de_misteri-avatar
de_misteri 14 Oct 11 at 7:42 a.m. GMT

Geraldine McEwan I thought was exactly how I had imagined her when reading the books. I think Julia McKenzie was also a very good Ms Marple- the actors there were all mostly good. I just think Angela Lansbury didn't have the right right amount of class or finesse. She is more suited as an actor to the more outrageous characters.

Tommy_A_Jones-avatar
Tommy_A_Jones 13 Oct 11 at 11:35 a.m. GMT

Atngela Landesbury was too young when she played Miss Marple now she is posibly too old, Joan Hickson was the best, I thought Julia McKenzie was better than Geraldine McKewan who wasn't right for the part in my view, Margaret Rutherford and Helen Hayes were both good in their way but AL was better IMHO.
