I prefer Margaret Rutherford. She was comical to watch.

I don't really think you can compare the 2 as when Margasret Rutherford was Miss Marple it was a less sophisticated era and people didn't mind the fact that 2 of the stories she did were actually Poirot stories and another was a complete work of Fiction and as has been said her Margaret Rutherford's portrayalk was comical and was probably supposed to be where as I think Geraldine Mkewan's portrayal goes too far in my view and i feel her portrayal is hammy.

I don't know. That's such a hard question! Margaret Rutherford was very comical, however, she wasn't Miss Marple! She had nothing to do with Marple. Geraldine McEwan's Miss Marple (sorry, Marple) is ridiculous. As Rutheford gives a hilarious and comical image, I would go to Rutherford but I don't really have a preference.

Although I said you can't really compare the 2 when MR was MM we were living in simpler times now having MM do other detectives books shouldn't be condoned like it was then although on balance I think MR did it better.

I just love Margaret Rutherford and enjoy her Miss Marple even though it was far off from what Agatha Christie had envisioned. I do like Geraldine McEwan's Marple over Joan Hickson who seems way too stiff for my liking.

Rutherford for comedy, but I liked McEwan (I'm aware, though, that she's not that popular among several people).

Although Margaret Rutherford's Miss Marple is nothing like her character in the book, she is a delight to watch. I love the comedic spin she puts on Miss Marple. The Miss Marple Geraldine McEwan portrays is more like the book than Rutherford but I don't like her. Most Miss Marple movies McEwan is in are complete adaptions of the book which frustrates me. On the other hand, Joan Hickson acts like Miss Marple, looks like her, and the movies she is in follow the book.

Margaret Rutherford's adaptions were made for comedy, the problem is, Geraldine McEwan's weren't, but somehow, over the seires', they have become farce like! I mean, look at the latest series...

EAch of them offers a different persepective on Marple.  However, McEwan's Marple cracks me up when I see her and she's a delight.  Hickson's version I find is very soft, quiet and perspective whereas, Rutherford, I haven't seen too much of but she's pretty good too.  Overall, my favourite is McEwan.

McEwan, to me at least was always the best Miss Marple. I've never actually seen a Rutherford Marple dramatization, but I just think McEwan has that kindness and elderly charm that Miss Marple is all about.

acronMan you should sewe the Margaret Rutherford Films, they aren't necessarily accurate as in 2 Miss Marple tackles Poirot stories and another is Pure fiction but they are very entertaining and Joan Hickson is in the 4th. I think Joan Hickson is a far better Miss Marple but that is just my opinion.

I know everyone will say that Margaret Rutherford was THE Marple for some of us but I do enjoy Geraldine McEwan more.  She made Marple more fun and hip, smiling more and letting loose (within her age and society at the time)...not afraid to journey out to solve cases.  I mean I enjoyed Rutherford but you don't see her riding the sidecar of the motorcycle like McEwan did in Murder of the Vicarage...that was a hoot!  One of the funniest I'd seen!

I'm such a duh...you are correct and I should remind myself to proof read what I type on here. lol   Joan Hickson is of course THE Miss Marple.  Got my Marples mixed up but I am probably among the minority who enjoyed and preferred McEwan role over Rutherford (who's a delight as well) and even Hickson.

I liked Geraldine McEwan's portrayal better Dame Margaret Rutherfield's.
