When someone is described as Victorian I think strict or stern too, Winne, so I agree w/ you. Perhaps Julia Mckenzie meant --in not so many words -- that Miss Marple had Victorian values.
Yes perhaps she did Moley, but as is stated in 'At Bertrams Hotel' she could move with the times (I haven't read it but in the JH version she said Bertrams seems to have stayed the same which it shouldn't have well that's the gist of what she meant I think.
My recollection is she started out much older (how I wish Life would imitate Art!) and fluffier and became more energetic and robust later on.
I know this is Off-topic but also the article said Britain sees the series in the Autumn and as I know some places n the world have already seen 'A Pocketful of Rye, 'Murder Is Easy and 'Why Didn't They Ask Evans' and the article said there were 5 in the series I was wondering what are the other 2? Apparently she has signed a 3 year Contract and apart from 'Pocketful of Rye' there is only 'Carribean Mystery, 'The Mirror Crack'd and 'They Do it With Mirrors left so I wonder what the Non-Marples will be done?, If Sparklintg Cyanide is done I won't weep.
WINNEBAGO1901If Sparklintg Cyanide is done I won't weep.
I would weep! Sparkling Cyanide is my second favorite AC book. I can't bear to see it ruined w/ Miss Marple in it!
I had a real struggle with it, so I think Miss Marple can only improve it.
They've shown them here on ABC in Australia recently and I was a bit dissapointed with Why Didn't They Ask Evans and Murder is Easy even though they were beautifully filmed and all of the quirky characters were great. It's just sad that they've run out of real Marples.
The Mirror Cracked and A Pocket Full of Rye were fantastic.
Julia McKenzie isn't my favourite Marple so far, but she was good. I prefer Geraldine McEwen's twinkly, knowing Marple.
So if they have done 2 real MM stories for the series it would just leave 2 left and the article I read said Julia McKenzie signed a 3 year Contract so maybe some short stories will be done.
You bring up a valid point, Winne. I mean, why don't they take the Miss Marple short stories and make them into an adaptation? At first I thought perhaps they were trying stretch out the MM series w/ the non series books but there are plenty of short stories w/ her in it. It is very curious.
To 3rdGirl: I agree w/ everything you said in you post. However I am still not sure which MM I like the best I keep changing my mind on that one :0)

In This weeks TV Times there is a Picture of Julia McKenzie as Miss Marple she says Agatha Wrote Miss Marple 2 ways, when she came up with the Character she was (And I Quote) 'Victorion, sweet and Sparkly' but when 10 years later when Agatha went back to Miss Marple she made her (And again I Quote) tweedier and sterner' which is what Julia McKenzie has gone with, (I thought the Victorions were quite stern) Anyway, I don't recognise the first description of Miss Marple and am glad she has decided to play her tweedier. They are being shown in Britain in the Autumn.
