Hastings!!!!!! I fell in love with his character during the first book!!
There's no question! I'd marry Poirot! OH I LOVE HIM 'though I'm a bit taller than he... but I really love everything of his manner and every little obsession of Hercule!
Nor me! I like my fellows clean shaven.
Some people obviously find long, full black beards an attractive feature.....
Personally they don't work for me.
Yes, if you consider that Emily was rich enough to attract gold digging toy boys, she colud have at least married an attractive one!
Ooooh! I just had a horrible thought that made the hairs on the back of my head stand up! Not so much in canon but in the film/Suchet version of Mysterious Affair at Styles. Can you imagine being married to Mr. Ingelthorpe??? I find him EXTREMELY creepy.
This topic could get a little racy! Behave now! There are children present!
I prefer to say which I'd rather virtuously marry, which of course ive already answered. Giles eh? isn't he never around? always off somewhere "on business". Unless that's what your looking for!
I wonder which female AC characters the men would like to marry? They never say do they?
LOL Miss Quin, can't really argue with the expert.
We have to move away from this topic now? damn, it was just starting to get interesting :))
can i just say that if i had to go throught the trouble of smuggling an AC character into the bedroom it would be Giles Reed from Sleeping Murder :))
LOL dina- But it's so hard to smuggle a Catholic priest into your bedroom, without servants being suspicous! Not that Ive ever tried. Honestly!
You have the right idea Jill. Moving away from this topics before we are all told off..
I remember that photo- it was his head and it seemd to be floating mid air? Angus McBean photograped Agatha Chrisite didn't he?
Seperate bedrooms?..... I'd want seperate appartments!
Miss Quin and Dianqoi...great "needs" list for being with Shaitana lol!
YEs, the adaptation certainly leads one to believe that Mr. Shaitana's interests lie completely outside of classical marriage/relationships. don't you just love the portrait used in that adaptation? It's classic Angus McBean and speaks to Shaitana's egocentricity to have such a grand photographic portrait of HIMSELF lol! Over the dining table. I loved this actor as Shaitana. He captured my mental image of him perfectly. LOL Miss Quin! I can perfectly imagine Shaitana in that red silk monogrammed dressing gown and I love your first "need" (a separate bedrooom LOL! what a hoot!)
I think you forgot:
6) A priest with experience of exorcism present at all times!
The name itself is really creepy (it's arabic for satan) and the actor who played him was really great.
Married to Shaitana? I'd advise you to ask for a few things:
1.) A seperate bedroom!
2.) About 3 locks and bolts on the bedroom door !
3.) Plus chest of drawers that can be placed in front of the bedroom door!
4.) a small revolver, just as a deterrent!
5.) a phone for emergencies. If things get bad I'll call Poirot, Hastings and Mr Quin! I mean he might prowl about at night in the corridoors.(probably in a red silk mongrammed dressing gown!)
He's that creepy! I can't help think that his attentions might be aimed elsewhere though. The adapt implied that even more strongly. I'm one of the few fans of the adapt, it was flawed but quite stylish. I did think of Shaintana in the book as rather older and more flamboyant, rather camp actually. But the actor did a quite good job.
LOL Jilli!
Miss Quin, yes I loved Shaitana's character in canon and thought he was well casted in the Poirot/Suchet movie feature. I loved his being a "collector" of fine things and would love to be surrounded by such things but I'm not sure I'd sleep well at night with him at my back ;o) I rather think I'd sleep with one eye open if I were married to him! lol!
I confess: I did like reading about Mr Ellsworthy. I found him interesting, in a Gothic villian way. But he's repulsive! I expect the blood letting was a release of frustration and such, as none of the girls liked him.
Rather perverse, like Shaitnana in some respects.
I see exactly!! A point well made. I never thought I would look on Mr Pye as a safe option for marriage!!!!
you see? My Pye-man is looking better and better by the minute *wink*
Some kind of Jekyll and Hide character? Possibly, but I wouldn't like to make the experiment!!!! Like you, I'm certain the only form of 'marriage' he would go through would have nothing to do with any orthodox ceremony. Thinking if it is making my skin crawl......
What Mr Creepworthy does in his spare time? I shudder to think.... On the other hand he may just while away the time counting his stamp collection.
It would have been nice if he'd been bumped off, for the sake of human race. He wouldn't even respectfully marry. You couldn't get him anywhere near a church, he'd start to scream in pain.
Speaking as a vegetarian, sacrificing chickens doesn't do it for me either!!! I agree Mr Ellsworthy would rate amongst the most repulsive AC character to marry. I really DREAD to think what other sort of things might amuse him in his spare time....
Heh, no but if I was Columbine Quin, it wouldn't matter! I could go wherever he goes. Actually, this has gotten very weird!
Worse that Simeon Lee... The most repulsive AC character to marry for me has to be Mr Ellsworthy from Murder Is Easy. Can you imagine the hard work getting out those blood stains?! Plus him staying out all night at Black Masses!! ugh. I like animals and no, sacrifficed chickens is a no!
shudders.
God, NO, not Simeon Lee!!!! Yuck, yuck!!!!! What a nasty thought! I know he's very rich but marrying him would be too high a price to pay! Nasty old man and, as MissQuin says, he would probably live for many years due to sheer bloody-mindedness!! As for choosing Mr Quin..... well, as long as you don't mind a man who isn't around much of the time!! He isn't what I would call reliable!
You see? lol! My mr. Pye isn't the worst choice possible *wink* and I was quite serious when I said I'd marry Mr. Pye as my first choice. I'm admittedly jaded by a marriage and bad divorce and I think Mr. Pye would be a breath of fresh air.
I like Hastings and I like Hugh Frazer, but not in a romantic way. In fact this topic has taken a suprising turn!
Simeon Lee??!!! God, I'd marry Mr Pye in a shot, rather than that beastly old lech Lee! urgh. If he hadn't been murdered, he'd have been a round another 30 years, with sheer will power. Plus he's make everyone fight over his money, just to be perverse!
I'll stick to marrying Mr Quin. Odd I know...
at poirotgirl: he IS yummy in a cute sort of way, but noone can deny that a man has smokin' pair of legs on him :)))
dinagojCan i go with the actor who plays Hastings in Suchet series :)))
yummy!!!
he's adorable isnt he.... lol at yummy.
Can i go with the actor who plays Hastings in Suchet series :)))
yummy!!!
ok...so lets keep david suchet as poirot.....hugh laurie definately as hastings....now we have a ms lemon and jaap ....
ms lemon - julliane moore?
I would marry Simeon Lee from "'HP's Christmas": very rich and very old!
brilliant brilliant brilliant choice! spot on girl!
Hugh Laurie as Hastings. He can do an upper crust accent, as seen (or heard)in Jeeves and Wooster.
my little grey cells are working over time ze little grey cells ...
ah yes MissQuin I know I know but im trying to diversify and challenge the norm....
It amuses me as Mr Pye was descibed as a spinster, rather than a eligible bachleor.
I think I'd sooner chose Poirot over Mr Pye.
A Hollywood Poirot? I'm not sure because I love the Englishness about the series. Even though Poirot is Belgian and travels abroad, he often meets English and is somewhat bewildered by our customs.
I kind of see Poirot AS David Suchet. It would be scary to see Beau Pirot, as was suggested to Agatha Chrisite for the stage play. He was 20 years younger and flirted with women. Can you believe it?
jaap - robert downey junior
Mmmmm, Mr Pye would not be my choice either! But I can see the advantages in the things you say, knotty!!! However, I have a feeling he might act like a spoilt child much of the time - and I'm NOT looking to be a mother figure to anyone!!!!
Bless you, MissQuin - still believing there is romance out there to be had. Maybe there is and I've always just been in the wrong place at the wrong time.....
hahah im glad we're all love it this thread though......
lol at Mr Pie
but imagine, danny devito as Poirot
i can't think of who I would choose for Japp and Hastings...can you help? brad, george and jim (carey) dont seem to fit the bill...
Marry Mr Pye from The Moving Finger!? I'd never considered him before! He's make a fun friend, with gossip and antiques discussions but a husband? Mmm, I think it would lack any romance for some reason..
This whole topics hysterical.
oooh Gosh! I don't think I'd want to marry any of those three. Poirot is just too exacting and tidy, Hastings would make me crazy with his bad investments and Japp never occurred to me as anything at all attractive. This is going to make everyone laugh but I would marry Mr. Pie! lol! No expectations of anything intimate or sexual and PLENTY of reading, nightlife and shopping ;o)
I don't know that Hastings was ever described as good looking. Dulcie (Cinderella) called him a mutt!!
I would choose Poirot... Because Hastings is already married!
Perhaps women prefer Men who are Chivalrous rather than Egotistical
Everybody chooses Hastings over Poirot, which proves that good looks are more important than brains.
Probably Hastings.
I think that's known as having your cake AND eating it, MissQuin!!!!
I'd cheat. I'd chose Greg Wise, then ask him to buy me the book, as a wedding present! lol. Wake up me, it's never going to happen. (rolls eyes)
MissQuinAn utter frivolous question: If you had a choice of Greg Wise or a first edition Agatha Chrisite, say Styles, which would you choose?
I know which I would
Tough one. The spoilt child in me, trying to finagle a way to have both, would ask for a trial period with each before a final decison.

An utter frivolous question: If you had a choice of Greg Wise or a first edition Agatha Chrisite, say Styles, which would you choose?
I know which I would
MsTreeHugger, I have to say my enthusiasm for books goes WAY beyond my enthusiasm for my 'ideal man'!! After all, books are real (you should see my house - the amount I now own is becoming ridiculous!)and the rest is just a lovely dream!
And your secret is safe with me, MsTreeHugger.....
MissQuin and Puffinjill, you are too hilarious! Not sure if you're enthusiasm for dreamy men is matched or exceeded by that for an attractive edition of an AC classic. Up until now (please don't tell), I don't own any AC. Our public library has a complete collection so I borrow. Guess I should reconsider....
Well poirotsgirl, reflecting on your options , I'd choose Hastings... a little needy but fun.
If the choices were wide open, Raymond West pops immediately to mind (like minds, JuliaUpjohn?). Really, what's not to love.... creative, adventurous, socially adept, a real challenge and a good nephew to boot.... swoon. Now, this is based on my reading to date, so please don't disillusion me if he turns into a cad in a story that I haven't read yet. I'll maintain my crush for now and see the other side in due time...like many a relationship.
Id want to marry poirot because he is just so damn funny!

Oh dear! One man, three women......there will be tears before bedtime!
NO! He's for me!!!! I want to be Mrs Wise!!! If I had him Id never look at another man, ever.. not even JJ Feild.. Seriously!

BUNDLE!!!! My old friend!!! How nice to hear from you again! And how typical that it's on a thread discussing attractive men again!!! Everyone WILL get the wrong idea of us!
As to your three choices, well, I can't say I would say no either. And as for Greg Wise, oh yes, I QUITE agree. He would fit the bill very nicely, thank you!
MissQuin
PuffinjillOh bless you!! Anyway, what does age matter? As long as he's rich......
Tut tut Jill! No, all joking aside I'm no Jane Wilkinson. I wouldn't marry for money. I'd want a man whose kind and loves books and treats people as equals.
That sounds like Greg Wise!
I'd definetly marry Charles Arundell (Dumb Witness). WOW! Talk about a HANDSOME! But he would have to lose all contact w/ that weird sister of his: Theresa.
My next pick would be Anthony Cade! Poor Bill would have to move out of the way for him!
Then I'd tear Simon Doyle away from both Jackie and Linette! Those two just brought out the worst in him!
Ooh, yes, handyman skills would be beneficial! There is ALWAYS the need of another bookcase!!! Unfortunately these are not in evidence in my house unless I have a go myself! But if you meet that multi-millionaire, you can pay someone to do it all for you!
Puffinjillbut I am blessed with a partner who lets me fill the house with books and talk about them all I like. He doesn't listen, mind you, nor does he share my love of reading but I'm working on it!
Ah, sweet. I might have to choose any man who can put up with piles of books all over the stuff. I'm not very tidy. It would be handy if my dream fellow had carpentry skills too, for making shelves for all the books! LOL
Cougar??!!! Not in the least! I'm not sure I'm nice (thanks for that, MissQuin!) but like you, I would prefer an man who adores books as much as me and who would be happy to discuss them all day long. Kindness, respect and consideration are important characteristics too. If he also happened to look like Richard Armitage and have a large bank balance, then so much the better.... Sadly, reality hasn't quite delivered me this dream but I am blessed with a partner who lets me fill the house with books and talk about them all I like. He doesn't listen, mind you, nor does he share my love of reading but I'm working on it!
Nooo! Jill's too nice to be cougar. Anyway, cougars don't marry their pray!
MissQuinPuffinjillOh bless you!! Anyway, what does age matter? As long as he's rich......
Cougar alert??
PuffinjillOh bless you!! Anyway, what does age matter? As long as he's rich......
Tut tut Jill! No, all joking aside I'm no Jane Wilkinson. I wouldn't marry for money. I'd want a man whose kind and loves books and treats people as equals.
Oh bless you!! Anyway, what does age matter? As long as he's rich......
Dear me, we seem to be gving the impression that we are very mercenary and only interested in how large a bank balance this 'ideal' man has! That couldn't be further from the truth - honest! Perhaps we should get back to discussing Christe characters instead of showing everyone a side of our nature that would be better left unsaid.....
Oh dear, Ive said the wrong thing again
. I think I'm more likely to bag myself a mature Uncle. I don't mind an older man, epecially a rich one! A Cary Grant type, nice! and you might end up with the nephew after all.
Oh dear, are bachelor uncles all I'm fit for? I'm fast qualifying to be 'middle-aged spinster of the parish', that well-know character on lots of AC's books!! However, I don't wear tweed and I'm not terrifically hearty like most of them seem to be!! Poor little Puffin!!
Sigh. I think multimiionaires like blonde Baywatch bimbo types, rather than petite brunettes like Miss Quin. Unless there's a one who finds women who love AC books amzingly attractive.. Then I'll ask him if he has any rich brothers, cousins or bachelor uncles even?!
Bide your time, MissQuin. Who knows what the future may bring? When Mr Dashing Multi-Millionaire does show up, you've got all your wedding plans already made!! So, all you'll have to do is get him to sign a great wapping cheque and enquire (on my behalf) if he has a brother....
LOL There's no way my poor mother can afford it. Maybe my husband and his family can pay for it all! I suspect he'd have to be a multi millionaire to pay for all this....
Very slim chance. Harsh reality strikes- The weddings off!
I hope you have informed your parents of your plans because three weddings in full costume sounds rather costly!!!!! Don't forget my invite!!!
Maybe I should marry 3 times!!! The first Regency wedding then Victorian wedding then 30's wedding
Actually Victorian dresses look uncomfortable to wear. My husband to be dressed like Mr Darcy though, that sounds nice.
All these plans and no proposals
A 30s theme, Miss Quin, and not a Victorian- or Regency-Era theme in the garden?

Oh, that's interesting about the later editions having changes. I wonder if there were any changes made to The Labours? I have a paperback Fontana copy of 'Ten Little N******s', before the title was changed. I'm pretty sure it's an 80s copy, but I'll have to check. If it is an 80s copy then it must have been the last print run before the title was changed.

My AC editions are a motley collection too ranging from an original green & white paperback of The Labours from original publication date, to copies by Fontana which were new in the 1980s when I completed my collection. Some are handed down from my mum who was reading AC in the 50s & 60s and many are second-hand from charity shops. I do have a beautiful leather bound hard-back edition of Murder on the Orient Express which was purchased on the train itself, which I think I've mentioned before.
My choice would be Edward Angatell from The Hollow. Horses, farms, country side, open fires, high-back leather chairs, ah Ainswick, Ainswick....
Jerry was in WW2 so he was clearly a brave man. Yes he is quite nice. Though it's always the wicked ones that capture our imaginations, as Jilll rightly say's. I can think of loads of handsome characters actually.
My AC books are a somewhat motley collection. Some of them are incrediably worn. But Ive had to get whichever ones I could get hold of. I really badly want to replace the Pricking Of My Thumbs cover with the creepy doll, with one eye, bald and cracked face!! I hate it.
I have a few of the B&W signature editions, which are quite stylish.
Wow we have a Poirot crush here!!! Let us know how your date goes?!!Make sure your outfits completely symetrical too!
Thanks for that, MissQuin! I know I'm nosey but it's interesting to know how others developed a love for the same thing as you. As for what do I own, well, I have (almost) a complete set of Fontana paperbacks from the '80's (just missing one title, I think) but now I am buying them all again when I come across them in hardback. Plus I am buying any AC's (or, indeed, any other classic titles) that I come across in the classic green and white Penguin Crime cover. I also have a couple of books of her plays (but not all of them), her autobiographical works and a few other biographies and reference books about AC and her works. How many in total? Not sure but over 100. And I keep buying them....
Xrysoula, I sgree about Jerry Burton. He has always seemed a really attractive and reliable man to me, too. I think he hasn't been mentioned too much in discussions like this BECAUSE he is reliable!!! In reality, that would be such an important trait in a man, but in fiction a little bit of danger or recklessness always seems to get the pulse racing faster!!
Well I wouldn 't mind taking Poirot out of the shelf- I like his tidiness, I speak French rather well and his brains mean much more to me than his height.
If I could have my pick, though, I would go for Jerry Burton from The Moving Finger. He always struck me as handsome and reliable, too (which is rather rare in AC 's novels!), plus I think I would get along fine with his sister aswell.
charity shops are a great place to pick up cheap books. however if they are specific bookshops then they up the price alot. however you can find some real gems in there.
has anyone listened to the agatha christie remastered radio edits - they are bloody brilliant. very very old school.
I used to buy second hand books online all the time ebay and the now extinct yahoo auctions. But then the P&P went up alot and now it's really expensive and although you can combine items if's tricky for me.
I rely mainly on second hand shops. I picked up a copy of The Moving Finger today, looks likes it's been read once for £1.50! Lovely hardback with a retro green cover with spiderwebs. possibly a imatation of the orignal cover?
How many to I own, well I had to go count them! About 70, including ones relating to AC e.g the Anne Hart books and such.
My mother read Ackroyd, said it was good. I had been curious about Christie before. I then read a mix of Marple and Poirot short stories and then Ackroyd. I got hooked on them! And now here I am!!
How many titles do you own Jill??
Have you noticed the Irish characters tend to be bad in AC land??! I notice this becuase of my Irish blood. I can think of 4 Irish male characters who are rather wicked, but so attractive!! Maybe because of Agatha's half Irish husband??
Do you only buy them secondhand when you come across them in shops or do you buy rom the internet? Plenty of secondhand, cheap copies out there on sites for secondhand books or Ebay. How many AC titles do you own, MissQuin? And do you know why you began to read AC's works? It's always interesting to know what got fellow addicts interested in the first place!
Possibly. Although I have to wait to come across a second hand copy, which make take forever!
I think you should read The Man In The Brown Suit as soon as possible, MissQuin! Something tells me that you might find Mr Rayburn to your liking......
Ive not read Brown suit, so don't know how tasty this fellow is. But to make amends, yes, enjoy a candlelit dinner with Mr Rayburn!

Can I have Harry Rayburn from The Man In The Brown Suit? That will MORE than make amends and I'll be your friend forever!!!!!
Oops, sorry Jill! My little joke, um.. I don't know what to say to make amends! You get first pick of the fellows?
How about Colonel Despard, in his riding gear?! winks. That was one of the best things about the Cards adapt which I quite liked. Although I didn't like the changes, I could laugh them off, becasuse they were SO untrue!Well, THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!!!!!!!! So I get Poirot while you swan off into the sunset with the younger, more attractive men!! Is that the best I can do?! Actually I don't speak French either but, unlike you, I don't think I'm taller than him. Believe me, his fussy ways would certainly not be easy to live and neither am I, so this definately, DEFINATELY would not be a good idea.
Don't worry, I'll send Parker Pyne round. He patches up all afaris of the heart, so Ive read. Glad we won't fight over rRchard. We don't want to fall out like Linnet and Jackie, do we?!
There's always Poirot left on the shelf if your interested Jill!! My excuse for not wanting him myself, is that I don't speak French and I think I'm taller than him.
Fight over him?! I think one look at me and he would come running to you, MissQuin!!! Poor sad, little Puffin!!
So we'll fight over him?! Joking. Richard sounds nice though. Bills quite sweet too, I think Nurse becamse fond of him, but nurse weren't supposed to marry then.
I would agree with MissQuin about Richard Carey from Murder In Mesopotamia. He always sounds so attractive. Out in the desert, under the hot sun.........
David Hunter from Taken At The Flood (attractive to women, Irish soldier, rebel, dangerous air to him)
Charles Arduell? Dumb Witness, charming scoundrel with lovely manners and openly impish but untrustworthy!
I think most Chrisite books have at least one charming man.
I'm afraid I only know Hastings from that list, so I'll refrain from giving any verdict.
But Hastings was in WW1 so he was a brave man. If you could have a fatnasy man mash up (I need to get out more lol) then what would it be.
Hastings niceness with
Charles dark good looks
David Hunter's sense of adventure?
I'd be "do you have to spend so much time with elderly bachelors?!
hahahahahahahahahahah

Yes agree Miss Quin - hastings a bit too weddy and not very exciting. He doesnt have a tash all the time though. Poirot - oh the idea alone is just gross - I wouldnt know where to start on that one! Jaap would want his fish and chips every friday and again he's too boring.
shall we cast the net wider? who would be the ultimate 'hottie'?
Such as...? Besides the obvious, of course.
Lawks! I don't fancy any of them. I like Hastings as a person, but not keen on taches! If he shaved it off, then Hastings.
Poirot would drive me mad with his tidiness. Japp's got too mundane a mind, I can't imagine him being romantic.
There's other AC males I much rather marry.
Of those three: Hastings. Poirot is too organised (yet surprisngly romantic sometimes!).
If I could choose anyone, perhaps Raymond West?
Just popping in: I believe I mght be able to vouch for my dear friend Miss Quin, but I'd rather wait her to go and reveal it herself...
awesome - someone replied!
yes i think hastings too.
Well, certainly not Poirot. I would drive him mad with my fairly disorganised ways and he would drive me mad with his OCD.
So I'd go for Hastings.
Ten people, each with something to hide and something to fear, are invited to a lonely mansion on Soldier Island by a host who, surprisingly, fails to appear.
When the wealthy patriarch, Aristide, is murdered, suspicion falls on the whole household. ...

Just a little bit of light hearted humour for the ladies....
Who would you choose from Japp, Poirot or Hastings...
