I believe it's for his entire body of work: Poirot is his most famous and beloved role, but he's also given many other critically acclaimed performances on screen, stage, and radio.
That's wonderful news, I heard it this morning and was really happy for Suchet. 
Is the award mainly because of his work in Poirot, or has he been in lots of shows, and is an all-round acting great??
Lizzie II also honored Christie herself.
Weird that I've been able to find only one instance of that photo on the 'Net. And I wonder who's that chap between them.
That would be nice, perhapsa her Majesty is an Agatha Christie Fan as she honoured Joan Hickson too when she was Miss Marple.
