Mystery Man

The Mystery Man is back! And more devious than ever...

The Mystery Man (who could also be a woman, it's a mystery after all) has kidnapped eight characters from the stories of Agatha Christie. Trouble is, we don't know who he's kidnapped!

In an email to the official Christie Community, the Mystery Man has revealed that beginning Thursday, July 7th 2011, he will allow one character per week the chance to speak.

And this is the place to put your theories and ideas to the Christie community, or just to browse to catch-up on all the latest events should you not want to use Twitter to follow the game.

Victim 2

Moderator2 05 Jul 11 at 12:50 p.m. GMT

Whatever you do, do not name the character in the forum, it will ruin the game for other players! Though feel free to help others along, just don't make it too easy for them. Anyone guilty of making it too easy will find themselves bumped off! (and banned from entering the competition).

All four messages from Victim 2 have now been released, they were:

"I never trust the ‘non-British’"

"Always enjoyed my stints in India"

"I do like smoking my pipe"

"I was John Armstrong’s best friend"

What if you haven't yet read the book in question?!?!?!? I am doing vigorous searches in order to obtain the identity of this victim! I'm so far behind! And my mom won't let me get another AC until I finish my summer reading for school! :( I'm reading as fast as I can, but can anyone help me until then?

I got an out of order victim on my thord try. Although, some one in the forums had given a clue leading to it, though it didn't match the victim's clues...

I haven't read all the books either, LittleMiss, nor many of the short stories, so I'm hoping the victims are only from the novels. I only managed to find Victim 1 from a hint in the forum (from Agathasmykid, I think) that led me to the relevant book, which I hadn't read before. Can't help you with your reading homework, but I can express sympathy as a fellow passenger on this thrilling ride. Hope this leads you to the correct victim!

No one was unsporting. Everyone [as far as I know] who has discovered a later victim has done so by accident while making guesses at Victim 1 or Victim 2. You don't seriously think people are randomly entering hundreds of AC character names in the hope of chancing upon a later victim do you?
SocksDaventry
Game-makers, thanks for taking down the future victims' pages; it was really rather unsporting of players to make impatient guesses rather than try to solve the mystery from the clue tweets.

Not hundreds, SilverTyne, but a couple of players did say they've found, or know someone who's found, seven or all eight victims. With a thousand characters in the Christie bibliography, one would have to have entered dozens of names to arrive at the correct victims. Neither am I saying they were deliberately trying to discover all the names, but the way they were playing the game did contradict its spirit, which is not to make guesses but to use the clues on Twitter and in this forum. I'd call that unsporting.

So, moderators, thanks for levelling the playing field a little. I'm enjoying how this game is bringing me back to the stories!

Our apologies! We have now deactivated any victims not in play, and have also named them Victim 1, 2, 3, etc so you know who you've found.

Oh  and I thought that all the victims were there in order to confuse us. Thinking of the game ahead i envisaged the following finale: that only having the victims in the correct order can the "code" be broken. Something like that.

I think that's brilliant idea, Pat_september.

I really like this game and I would like to thank the people who orginized all this and also the AC fans because, even though I have never met them, I feel that I know them... And of course all this happened thanks to Christie. She not only wrote amazing stories, but also achieved to bring together people from different countries, with different language or age.

Well, I'm a little off topic but I really enjoy this game and i can't help smiling whenever a new clue is on

I don't think we are allowed to say, Amk.

My best advice would be to look at the clues and just think of the most likely books that contain those keywords. There are probably three or four stories which would fit, but only one character.

And I think there is one more clue to come.

I'm fairly sure about Victims 1 and 2 now, although for a while I had the wrong Victim 2, but with the clues it is fairly obvious who this person is.

As for any connection between them, well I can't see one as yet.  It might be a word play or something like that, in which case we would need all the victims' names in order to work it out.

I thought I had the right victim, mainly because of the India angle, BUT with the third clue I'm not so sure that who I've found IS the second victim, mainly because who I've found is a woman!!! It would be great if the victims could be numbered because as Christie_Greece said earlier, if we think we've found Victim 2, and its acually another victim then we're going to be in trouble whan we are looking for future victims!

I've been thinking, how do we know that we have found the right victim? I mean, how can we be sure that the victim we have found is indeed No 2? This makes things confusing . And if we think that we have found, for example, victim No 2 but this is actually No 7, when it will be time to search for No 7, we will have a problem.

True, my hope though is that we have identified the right people.

My question this morning is, has anyone thought of any connection between Victim 1 and 2 yet?

Well, I thought a little about that but except of their gender I dind't find anything... =(

GKCfan-avatar

It would help if each victim's page were numbered.  I think we can figure out which victim is which because each set of four clues points only to one character.  Perhaps all eight victim pages are up.  There are maybe a thousand possibilities, so random guessing might lead to finding correct pages by pure chance.

When I accidentally guessed number 8, this was part of the message

xxxxx was the eighth and final victim of the Mystery Man, which means you should now have all that you need to identify the Mystery Man.

I am not getting the number of the victim.  This is what I am getting - I have got four victims so far and the message is always the same:

"Congratulations!

try thinking about the India angle, note the suitable books and think about it, when there are none left but one, you'll have it

Touche SpearmintHippo ;)

Thanks very much, for some reason I completely ignored this person....I think I passed judgement on myself too quickly...

Thank you, christie_greece, for the hint!  There were so many potential suspects that sounded like Victim 2...

Two down, six to go!  I'm ashamed to admit, though, that I had to take several stabs at this one before I got it.

AT LAST! I FOUND IT!!!! THIS WAS REALLY A TOUGH ONE! THANK GOD THAT THE MYSTERY MAN LETS EACH VICTIM SREAK MORE THAN ONCE OR LESS I WOULDN'T STAND A CHANCE. I HOPE YOY'LL FIND THIS HELPFULL. THINK: "WHICH CHARACTER OF ALL THE CHARACTERS IN EACH CHRISTIE NOVEL, MATCHES TO THE CONBINATION OF THE DESCRIPTIONS GIVEN IN THE VICTIM'S PHRASES?" IN THE END THE REMAINING CHARACTERS MATCHING TO THIS DESCRIPOTION WILL BE FEW. I'M SORRY BUT I CAN'T SAY MORE .

There's a second clue:

Victim 2 - Always enjoyed my stints in India. #agathachristiegame http://goo.gl/wdAS0

this helped me A LOT as it narrowed down the characters quite a bit..

Good luck!!

Well, I was reading the book of this victim while I was on a ship. Although this is one of my favorite books, I didn't remember this frase so I just guessed. Actually there are so many things happening in this book and quite many characters that are presented in detail. So it's difficult to remember everything, especially when there has been some time since you've read it. (it's been a year since I read it)

But don't be discouraged. If this frase sounds familiar to you, think of all the books you've read (that's what I did) and write them down. Then choose the most possible ones and think which character may be.

I hope it works because it worked with me. I wish I could help more but I'm afraid . So I'll just wish you luck and apologize for my english that are a bit "untidy" sometimes.

THANKS! I don't know how I didn't understand that much sooner than now, but thank to your advice I've finally found the victim! although I admit there are many characters in AC's books that fit this description, your description of the book was what really saved me.

thanks again!

I do hate reading on trains sometimes, the swaying just rocks me to sleep. And it iss even worst in the winter, so many delays. I almost always fall asleep while I'm reading.

And the worst part is I can never remember if I read the part about the red herring or not.

I don't know who it is yet. By "non-British," I think they mean Poirot. Poirot is Belgian. So are we looking for someone who doesn't trust Poirot?

HOWEVER I'M STUCK.WHAT IS DRIVING ME CRAZY IS THAT I'M SURE I'VE READ THIS PHRASE SOMEWHERE, BUT IT IS NOT AS EASY AS IT SEEMS. I HOPE THE 2nd VICTIM'S NEXT PHRASES WILL BE MORE HELPFULL. NEVERTHELESS I CAN'T STOP THINKING WHO IT CAN BE!!!
