Breaks between paragraphs

Can any moderators help me? Why am I sometimes unable to leave blank lines between paragraphs? There seems to be no rhyme or reason as to when it occurs, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't - I use return to leave the spaces but when I click to post, the messages are uploaded in one ugly chunk. When I am making an especially long post, this drives me crackers and no re-editing of it seems to have any effect. EDIT: Hell's bells, this is a prime example!
