Julia McKenzie's Marple

I thought we needed a place to discuss the new Julia McKenzie adaptations. The first two episodes have already aired in Ireland, interestingly enough. The other two are still unaired. I'm sure that the entire fourth season will air in the UK in the New Year, and we know that the U.S. and Canada will see them next summer. I've seen A Pocket Full of Rye and I'll watch Murder is Easy soon, so I'll give some insight as to what everyone can expect once those episodes air...

I just saw Julia Mackenzie as Miss Marple in "A Pocket Full of Rye". The adapt itself I loved (Kevin Elyot really respects AC's novels in his adapts). Mackenzie also shocked me. I really liked Geraldine McEwan in the role, but I loved her much more in it. I can very easily see her as Miss Marple, much more than McEwan.

Well, shanty sleuth, you certainly covered MIE well. In my IMDb review, I also ended up giving it a 7/10. I was open to changes, but the changes did NOT help the story at all (for the most part). It helped make the story much more farfetched, unlikely, unprobable. The changes were too numerous and defaced the story too much.

I think A POCKET FULL OF RYE was indeed, the better of the two. And I am just so glad Julia Mackenzie is Miss Marple. She absolutely shines in the role.

By the way, WHY DIDN'T THEY ASK EVANS is being adapted by Patrick Barlow (I think), who adapted BY THE PRICKING OF MY THUMBS. Good news or bad? I think it's good-- BTPOMT was really entertaining, despite the plot changes.

Ah, that was Stewart Harcourt. Patrick Barlow appeared as Mr. Timothy in BTPOMT, though. WHY DIDN'T THEY ASK EVANS? has the potential to be excellent even if the novel is changed. Hopefully the changes won't be as numerous as MURDER IS EASY. THEY DO IT WITH MIRRORS has a fantastic cast as far as I can see, and it could be another great entry in the series. If only Julia McKenzie could readapt the novels that were adapted with Geraldine McEwan... I'd love to see her in 4.50 FROM PADDINGTON or A MURDER IS ANNOUNCED. She still has A CARIBBEAN MYSTERY and THE MIRROR CRACK'D FROM SIDE TO SIDE, so I'm very excited for those.

Thankyou shanty sleuth I haven't seen any of the episodes with Julia McKenzie as Miss Marple but from reading people's review I am looking forward to them even more now and like you would love her to readapt the Episodes Geraldine McKewan did, I loved Patrick Barlow in BTPOMT, it nearly made up for the fact Miss Marple appeared and the fact I found Anthony Anedrews portrayal of Tommy as a bit severe.

Here are some interesting statistics I found: Stephen Churchett's Hit List (Books He's Responsible for Destroying Onscreen): - Murder at the Vicarage (Exception!) - 4:50 From Paddington (Exception!) - Sleeping Murder - The Sittaford Mystery - Nemesis - Murder is Easy On the other hand, Kevin Elyot has adapted: - Five Little Pigs - Death on the Nile - The Body in the Library (the final change I like to believe was made at the producer's insistence; it was wonderfully faithful until then) - The Moving Finger - Towards Zero - A Pocket Full of Rye Tom MacRae adapted only "At Bertram's Hotel". Stewart Harcourt adapted: - A Murder is Announced - By the Pricking of My Thumbs - Ordeal by Innocence Anyone notice any trends? At any rate, yes, Kevin Elyot should be the only person left to trust for these adaptations. "Murder on the Orient Express" for certain!!!

So you don't think grown men should have to take responsibility for their own actions then go_leafs? Kevin Eliot could have refused to make the ending in Body In The Library and he ruined Five Little Pigs by including a homosexual element which wasn't in the book, If they were real would you let off all the Murderers in Agatha Christie books of with a slap on the wrist and 100 Comunity Service?

The change in FIVE LITTLE PIGS, however, was so minor in comparison with the rest of it, that I really didn't mind it that much. Kevin Elyot is about the only screenwriter remaining who respects Agatha's original material.

winne, are you really comparing  tiny changes no one will remember in fifteen years with murdering people? really?

If Kevin Elyot hates getting paid, then sure. Maybe he thought putting a different spin on an old tale just wasn't worth missing out on what he would get paid, plus royalties. That's business, kiddo.

No of Course I don't santonix it just annoys me how some people sewem to be saying the Architect of the changes should be excused and given free rein to make more and anyway only time will tell if the changes are remembered in 15 years time.

I'm sure I'll get slated for this after my previous contribition to the sexuality debate but I feel the current production team have made those changes for two reasons: 1) to try and shock the diehard AC fans 2)to present a knowing nod in the direction of AC's many gay readers/viewers. Even dismissing the change in some characters' sexuality, the GM Marple's are incredibly camp in a way that the JH Marples never were.

Well, the changed ending in "The Body in the Library" was bad, but it provided an element of added shock. I'm not a fan of this ending, though. But then, similar things to that are reused over and over again and it becomes just plain stupid.
