More Poirot?

geoffas-avatar

I emailed ITV to ask if they had any news about the remaining Poirots to be filmed. They replied:

At the moment we do not have confirmed details regarding the filming of further episodes of Poirot.

I don't know if that sounds promising or not. At least they didn't say there were no details at all!

MissQuin-avatar
MissQuin 26 Oct 10 at 3:48 p.m. GMT

You have missed the meaning of my post entirely. I was merely pointing out that real modern day gispies don't usually dress in that steroeotyped fashion.

Your posts are just a series of contradictory statements:

I'm a snob for making a flippant remark about lack of diveristy in Midsommer?

I have a "chip on my sholuder" because I made a light hearted joke? I don't see anyone else on here complaining about what I wrote. Just because you have some pathological dislike of the word "snobbish?"

And then "I respect your choice of words" then go on to niggle at every comment I make on here?

Just let it rest Tommy. It I wasn't thick skinned I would find your posts just bullying.

The World has moved on, People are More wealthy ant so can afford Gold Hoop Earings and some people Dress above their Class and what isd a Bad Accebt to one isn't to another and again peope try to speek posh because they want to seem Posh.

MissQuin-avatar
MissQuin 25 Oct 10 at 5:01 p.m. GMT

For a small area there IS a amazing amount of titled gentry. Also I'm not saying all the characters ARE Lords. But live in comfortable homes, often have sports cars, well spoken and are of the upper classes. Even the ones that work are on the upper crust of society.

Any gispies seen must have all requirements on the Midsommer checklist:

1.) Waistcoats that went out about 1910

2.) Neckchiefs

3.) Gold hoop earings

4.) Bad accents

5.) Be of a sterotype that's ouststandly daft.

No Ive not seen all the MM episdoes, I have other stuff to do.

Tommy_A_Jones-avatar
Tommy_A_Jones 25 Oct 10 at 4:54 p.m. GMT

It is obvious you don't watch MM much as it isn't Packed with them but many Episodes to have Employers who by Definition do have staff.

MissQuin-avatar
MissQuin 25 Oct 10 at 4:33 p.m. GMT

The class system was huge in AC's day. The barrier is still very much in evidence between rich and poor. But only the very rich have servants. Not many Lords and Ladies out there, despite MM being packed with them. ;)

Diversity is the only way for TV to be interesting.

Talking of interesting.. (nudges McGinty) JJ Feild, now how could I forget him in DOTN?

Tommy_A_Jones-avatar
Tommy_A_Jones 25 Oct 10 at 4:21 p.m. GMT

Fine If you stand by your choice of words I respect that, however much I hate the word, It would be dull if all Television had to cater for all ages and types and Drama would be Dull if all Drama had to Portray all Types of People, In fact Midsomer mMurders is Like Agatha Christie Books, Working Class People are hardly ever Murderers.

MissQuin-avatar
MissQuin 25 Oct 10 at 4:09 p.m. GMT

I stand firm by what I said. Snobbish was exactly the right word to describe many of the Midsommer characters.

Ive already pointed out it's lighthearted, but it's gone stale and could do with more variety of people from different backgrounds. Instead we are given and endless prosession of Lords, Earls, Barons, Vicars and such. So it's not like introducing someone "not posh" would suddenly turn MM into a gritty, realistic crime show.

Tommy_A_Jones-avatar
Tommy_A_Jones 25 Oct 10 at 4:02 p.m. GMT

I totally agree Miss Quin although I do think your Post about Midsommer Murders would have worked just as well without the word Snobbish, Also I don't think a Light Hearterd Programe should be taken too seriously and No Drama should have to include every part of Society if it doesn't fit.

MissQuin-avatar
MissQuin 25 Oct 10 at 3:32 p.m. GMT

Well I'm not one to open old wounds actually. I don't even like disagreements (although I stand my ground when I think I'm not in the wrong). Of course people can say things that can be seen as offensive, when they meant no harm. I did assume that was the case of your previous remarks Tommy. So I was quite happy to engage with you in what I thought of as a friendly Downton Abbey discussion.

But seeing as you were so ready to make yet another scathing comment (That I'm a arrogant snob) which I thought of as rather.. off, than I can't help but feel disapointed that you have done it again.

The fact that making a point about lack of ethnic people and non upper class people, is seen to you as "snobbery" is rather curious.

But I wish to just let things rest. I know these posts between you and me must be tiresome for other forum members to read.

I'll pop round yours then McGinty, for a Poirot evening. Although you'd probably make me laugh so much I can't concentrate!

I'll be on here rating halloween Party after it's been on. The HP trailor I saw last night during Downton Abbey, looked great!

totty-ometer for Orient Express? -  Sounds like it could rank up there with my favourite Poirot series hunks moments:

1.) Hickory Dickory Dock- Nigel Chapman (Jonathan Firth) with damp hair, in a dressing gown! I must stop mentioning him though, or he'll get a restraining order out on me ;)

2.)  Five little Pigs- Toby Stephens looking so brooding.

3.) Cards On The Table: The Major in his riding gear ;)

I know there's more.

McGinty-avatar
McGinty 22 Oct 10 at 9:59 a.m. GMT

HeeHee - I'm thinking of watching it for the fourth time this weekend - but purely for the scenic views you understand

Hallowe'en Party is extremely well done too, very entertaining, I think you'll enjoy it. The one really big surprise is The Clocks -it's really, really good. Classic Christie. I always believed the book to be one of her weakest - rambling and incoherent. But the film is excellent, the scriptwriter has pulled it into sharp focus and dare I say, it could have been even better if they had reintroduced Miss Lemon . Can't believe I've said that ! But with or without Miss Lemon, it's a really tight, well written film, full of intrigue. Zero eye candy though ! There's a really amusing bit near the beginning showing Poirot watching a play by Ariadne Oliver. I'll not spoil it for you but it is very amusing, like an 'in' joke for Christie fans.

Please let me know what you think of Hallowe'en Party, I thought it so good I even forgave the profusion of pumpkins everywhere.

Aww, I'm flattered Mcginty. I take "feisty"as compliment! Knotty- you and I are proud to be McGinty's protoge's

Orient Express- I wondered why you watched it 3 times, now I know!! Eye candy;) Well I have Halloween Party to look forward next week.

Knotty- I love old British comedies too.

hugs to you both

As for you Miss Quin, I think I may have ALREADY adopted you ! I love your feisty attitude, you take no prisoners ! You're going to love Orient Express - the totty-ometer is bouncing through the roof

I really should have been born in the UK.  I was totally meant for BBC style programming.  Even when I was a child I loved that show "Are you Being Served?" and the comedy "Carry On" movies.  In more recent years my fave shows have been "My Family", "Keeping Up Appearances", "Ab Fab", "Mr. Bean", "On the Buses" etc.  Those shows are household names in your country but over here if I talk about them nobody knows what I'm talking about unless they are BBC fans (rare).  As I mentioned, I don't get BBC any more so I miss my BritComedy shows  :o/  Now there's so much more on the BBC channel that I miss out on too.  All the period pieces, the crime shows etc...  Anyone in the UK care to adopt me?  ;o)

I had a good chuckle at your description of Midsomer's population being depleated and properties being available and cheap.  ;o)  I've only seen that tv show once as my new tv/internet/phone provider doesn't have much British television programming but I still "got" the joke and it was funny :o)) (I'm in Canada for anyone who didn't know)

Moving on, I did catch an episode of Midsomer for the first time on our PBS channel.  It was quite good and I'd watch it again if it ever comes on and guess who was in it?  The actress who played Dr. Sheppard's sister!  Ewwww she died gruesomely in that episode!

MissQuin-avatar
MissQuin 21 Oct 10 at 3:54 p.m. GMT

Sorry to disapoint you, but I wasn't actually put out by your remark Tommy. I'm made of stearner stuff. No I'm not a snob, no-one's ever called me that, nor arrogant. I was merely making an off hand light hearted remark about Midsomer. We were having what I thought of as amiable, pleasant chat about Downton  Abbey, then you turned round and made what you presumably think of as a highly witty insult. Well, I'm not the one with the problem.

I found your remark on Cards On The Table about "grotesque" homosexuals highly offensive not to mention descriminating.

Tommy_A_Jones-avatar
Tommy_A_Jones 21 Oct 10 at 2:34 p.m. GMT

I don't know when they will show The Clocks, I should think they will show the Documentary when they show MOTOE, I remember when they showed Death On The Nile a Documentary about the making of it was shown on ITV3, I also know there has been one about the masking of The Mystery of The Blue Train also on ITV3, lets hope the Documentary will be on ITV1.

I also would just be happy with the remaining Novels to be Adapted

I am sorry MissQuin for being offensive but when people use the word snobby like that, it always winds me up and I USUALLY find that they are inverted snobs and to my mind inverted Snobbery is just as bad as Snobbery just as Positive Discrimination is just as bad as Discrimination in my view, It would be a sull word if we all liked thew same and Television would be a bit weird in my view if every Drama had to portray every part of Society.

Is there any news on whether the last 4 novels will be filmed, surrely they can't leave it here!

A while ago someone reported on here that they knew that Poirot was not axed. David Suchet was quoted, a few months ago, saying he believed scripts were being written. Though that doesn't mean ITV will commission the films. We can but hope it's a good sign. I'd be content just to get the 4 remaining novels. I can't see how they could do the remaining short stories.

geoffas-avatar

I wonder if we'll get the documentary "David Suchet on The Oreint Express" too. I notice it's on the bluray of MOTOE.

Sorry to go off topic (it's not about Downton Abbey or Midsummer Murders!), but very good news Tommy, to hear about Orient being on at Christmas. I assumed (or hoped) as much, but it is very good news to get it confirmed. Can't wait for next Wednesday either, is there any news on when The Clocks will be shown, surely that must be on soon too. Last bit, before you can talk about DA (which I'm really enjoying by the way) and MM (which I believe I would love, but for whatever reason have not gotten into) Is there any news on whether the last 4 novels will be filmed, surrely they can't leave it here!

MissQuin-avatar
MissQuin 20 Oct 10 at 3:34 p.m. GMT

I don't know if you meant to sound hurtful with that "chip on my shoulder" remark. I'm just giving the opinion that I find the characters Midsommer Murders very white middle-upper class. When are there anyone in MM who lives on council estate, who isn't a yobbo stereotype? How many ethnic people are portrayed in MM, next to none? I know it's not a accurate portrait of modern day Britian, it's  not meant to be taken deadpan seriously. Whih is why I lightheartedly said about the body count being so high.

I wasn't arguing, just stating what I thought. I do actually watch MM for time to time, when the mood takes me. I just laugh at alot of it, as people are meant to.

Tommy_A_Jones-avatar
Tommy_A_Jones 20 Oct 10 at 3:14 p.m. GMT

I like both Costume Drama's and "Cosy" Midsomer Murders, I don't think there is anything wrong with "Cosy" things after all that is what the Agatha Christie Books are and the better Adaptations of the books.

You called the Murderers in Midsomer Murders (Or did you mean all the Characters "snobby" but I will refrain from asking if you would like Vinegar with that Chip on your Shoulder.

MissQuin-avatar
MissQuin 20 Oct 10 at 3:01 p.m. GMT

I don't think that Midsommer is a very nice plce to live!! I mean it's full of adultrous, snobbish, obnoxious murderers! How there's anyone left in the village I don't know. The village must be a mass grave by now. oh and the biggest prison in the world! The propert must be cheap to buy in that area. lol Athough oddly enough it get's classed as "cosy".

I just prefer costume dramas because they are more involving. The standard of acting is much higher than soaps. The dialogue is far wittier. A good Jane Austen, Dickens or Bronte adapt can't be beaten on storylines. Reality TV is just dumbed down to a standard so low, I can't comprehend it. Rant over!

That's why although I don't see DA at the same level as Jane Eyre, I'd consider DA a cut above anything else on atm.

Thank you Geoff but I'm not sure if a Dutch DVD would play on our DVD players here in Canada.  Technology may have changed recently but up to recent I have had to watch buying from international sellers that it was the correct format of DVD.  I could probably also get it from the USA on amazon.com but the fees for crossing the border and customs charges are INSANELY high.  Most times higher than the cost of the item many times over.

You can buy the box set of Poirot season 12, including "Hallowe'en Party" on Amazon UK. It's a Dutch release but is in English with Dutch subtitles, which you can turn off. £14.48, which I think is a good price. I've got the set and can recommend it.

I'm so ENVIOUS!  I've been looking for a copy of "The Halloween Party" but they are extremely rare to find still.  I've seen copies on Ebay last month but never again since and kick myself for not bidding.

I've just watched the 2o1o release of "Orient Express" and unlike others on the forum I LOVED IT!  I wrote some of my thoughts in the "Orient Express II" thread in this forum.

I've seen the Clocks and although the book is my least favourite of AC's books so far, I did enjoy the movie.  Hopefully you will enjoy it as well.

Finding AC adaptations on television is almost impossible here where I live so I've been buying up DVD's and watch them as often as I please.  I love them all, even the older 'campy' versions done by actors other than Suchet  ;o)

Has anyone seen the Suchet feature called "Poirot and Me"?  It's fantastic and you can watch it on youtube if you like.  In it, he states that he has 12 more Poirot stories that are yet to be adapted.  I wonder when that documentary was made.  I sincerely hope he is able to complete all 12 remaining adaptations.  I think the doc was made in 2009 but I can't be sure.  If that's so, perhaps he only has 10 left to make.

Hallowe'en Party is being shown in the UK on ITV1 on Wednesday 27th October. The Clocks and Murder on the Orient Express were filmed in 2009 but have still yet to be scheduled. I'm sure ITV will be waiting to see the viewing figures for Hallowe'en Party and possibly the others too before making a decision whether more episodes will be filmed or not. On tv stations which are funded by advertising such as ITV, new episodes are only ever commisioned if viewing figures warrant it.
