I felt sad by it SPOILERS!

I didsn't like the disdcussions between the Passengers, I didn't like it seemed so slow before the Murder, I didn't like The Interviewing was rushed through and the verduct Poirot came to was also so quick, They obviously felt in this world of 'Celebrity' that as they had so many big names they had tp give them all huge scenes, The Albert Finney Film did this much more Sympathetically but there again that film had more time to do it in.

I liked aspects of Joanna Lumley's performance but I thought she was more frivolous and silly than the put portrays Dolly Bantry but it suited the feel of the Piece, I liked Joanna Lumley's performance but thought Gwen Watford was more realistic, I liked the side-kick role that Joanna Lumley had as Dolly, I felt that Joanna Lumley is a Fan of Agatha Christie if that makes sense.

Bunch_Marple-avatar
Bunch_Marple 19 Jan 11 at 8:18 a.m. GMT

I really liked Joanna Lumley as Dolly Bantry, she has much more charisma than the Joan Hickson version's actress. However of course, the film wasn't altogether gripping and I found my attention wandered. I might sound dreadful but I really laughed out lous at Julie McKensie's stunt when she was scared by the loud car, it was very funny!

Katherine-avatar
Katherine 18 Jan 11 at 9:50 p.m. GMT

Caroline Quentin is 51. Lindsay Duncan is 60.

To have made sense of the actresses' ages, the child should have been at least in his twenties, and probably in his thirties!

As for Heather Badcock, I can't imagine any woman describing herself as being "just a girl" when she was in her late thirties!

Tommy_A_Jones-avatar

I think they chose someone who was too old anyway but IU felt they did in the Angela Landesbury version.

I much prefer the Joan Hickson version of The Mirror Crack'd From Side To Side. Though some things from the book were cut out and though the Julia McKenzie version included some things that the Hickson version didn't have, I still love the BBC version. Actually that was the first Miss Marple film that I ever saw!

The worst possible thing they can do to a Chrisite adapt, is to have parts of it badly acted out.

And that happens a lot in the newer Christie adaptations, especially the Miss Marple films. They really need to get better actors who can act.

Tommy_A_Jones-avatar
Tommy_A_Jones 18 Jan 11 at 4 p.m. GMT

I re-read your post and now understand it Miss Quin, The Type of person  Heather Badcock is she would think of herself as a Girl when she had that first fateful meeting with Marina Gregg, Anyway, The time the Adaptation is set was probably not when Agatha Christie set it, when ITV first making the Marple series they said the stories were set in the 50s but Murder At The Vicarage was Published in 1930 so if that is wrong Heather might not be the age she is in the book.

I agree about The Angela Landesbury version being Better (It's on my To Buy List) and I agree that Nigel Harmon was too wooden (Even though I thought the Character was wooden) but I am confused, at First you say he was badly cast then in your 2nd Paragraph you say he was well cast, I thought Martyin Jarvis pronouncing the Victims name the way he did was unnecessary and preferred the Opening in the AL version, Great Idea I thought.

David Suchet has already said that he will not do Adaptations of books Poirot isn't in so there is No chance he will be in an Adaptation of 4.50 From Paddington in fact there is mpre chance of Julia McKenzie re-making the Episodes Geraldine McKewan did than there is of Davisd Suchet doing any of the Poirot's. he shouldn't be in.

Bottom line, at minimum there's enough for nine more 90-minute episodes, and possibly more.

lets face it, the way things are going at the minute, I wouldn't be surprised if they remade something like The 4.50 from Paddington, and put Poirot in that!

A Happy New year to all Christie Fans!

I must say that David Suchet was excellent as ever as HP in Murder on the Orient Express. However I find it bizarre that The Clocks hasn't been shown yet - does anyone know why?

GKCfan-avatar
GKCfan 03 Jan 11 at 11:43 p.m. GMT

There's no guarantee that there's only one more season of Poirot to go, although Suchet said something to that effect in a recent interview.  There are four novels. one collection of interrelated short stories, a play, and one stray short story left, plus a few stray short stories that are alternate versions of already filmed stories.  Bottom line, at minimum there's enough for nine more 90-minute episodes, and possibly more.

LovesMysteries-avatar
LovesMysteries 03 Jan 11 at 11 p.m. GMT

There is going to be 1 more season of Poirot left and then after that the show is over. I hope that these producers will be faithful to the books and just trust the material and not their own feeble decisions.

I think that they should stop filming the Miss Marple films and film the rest of the Tommy & Tuppence books instead. There are only 3 more books left that needs to be filmed. The short stories and The Secret Adversary were done in the 80's and both Francesca Annis and James Warwick who played T&T are still alive and kicking and they would be the right age to play in these 3 stories since both characters have aged as A.C. has originally written.

And also in the 80's they had a series called "The Agatha Christie Hour" that had adapted 10 of Agatha Christie's short stories into 1 hour films and I think they should bring that series back again but with a new different crop of short stories. Or could they film the non-series A.C. books WITHOUT shoehorning Miss Marple in. Heck, can they just film the Miss Marple short stories instead of re-making the books all over again? I mean we already have great adaptations from the late Joan Hickson who played MM in the late 80's and early 90's and those films were more faithful then the crap that is coming out now. And can they do something else then throwing MM into stories that she don't belong in? I hate to say this (well actually I don't, lol!) but I think that they shouldn't even do the MM short stories because I've seen The Blue Geranium and it wasn't good at all--the film had too much melodrama (as they all do), the acting was awful (like usual), and even though they probably added some plots to the film to flesh it out it STILL didn't work for me.

Ok, I think I'm done ranting

SpearmintHippo-avatar
SpearmintHippo 03 Jan 11 at 10:36 p.m. GMT

We certainly had a very Christie Christmas!

Murder in the Orient Express was - to me - a dissapointment, especially following Hallowe'en Party which I thought a V good adaptation.  Like others had said, it seemed almost as if it were a different person and not Poirot at all! Although Poirot always does what is right, in the book there was sympathy and empathy for those who loved the Armstrong family and his decision was not so agonised over, he was not so angry and Cassetti certainly showed no remorse for his crime.  Still, could have been worse I suppose, they could have done an Appointment with Death on us! (I'll NEVER get over that adaptation ::shudders:: - and I'll never watch it again!)

Please, please please STOP messing about with Poirot and do the books justice.  Oh and can we have the proper theme back again? - much better than the current rubbish!

So far  the only Marple I've seen is  Secret of Chimneys.  I like Julia McKenzie as Marple, she's far better then McEwan (who was truely awful!) but it wasn't as if they'd even just slipped Marple in to the story, the screenplay writer went completely bonkers! Where was Battle?(who was Finch?) , Treadwell is a lady and Virginia Revel and Bundle become sisters?

As others have said, Marple is being shoe horned into other books because they've given McKenzie a 3 series contract and there are only so many times you can re-make the original books, but what is next? MM solving The Hound of the Baskervilles perhaps? Quit flogging the dead horse!

LovesMysteries-avatar
LovesMysteries 03 Jan 11 at 8:27 p.m. GMT

I think Poirot from the new crop of films have some of the warmth that he used to have from the classic Poirot series but not as much but just a little is better than what I saw on Murder On The Orient Express which was like looking a different Poirot altogether!

For me I simply can't ignore the silly changes that are being made to Agatha Christie's work. I know that my talking about it is not going to stop them but I can sure tell those who are going to watch these new adaptations that they are different from the films and that the books are better.

MissQuin-avatar
MissQuin 03 Jan 11 at 8:09 p.m. GMT

Ive not watched any of the Christmas episodes yet! I could be watching them now I suppose

The Clocks sounds good, I'd like them to bring some warmth back into poirot. Halloween party was up there with the classics though.

Ive not seen Evans. Damn ITV!! Towards zero was ok, they had good casting (Greg Wise and Aileen Atkins stood out as best) but it felt too rushed in parts and the characters quite dull. I thought Alan Davies was lousy!

It's true- the best way to a happier life- ignore any TV chnages to adapts. Sadly I can't always switch my mind off. I'll try harder :)

McGinty-avatar
McGinty 03 Jan 11 at 8:01 p.m. GMT

I've not had a chance to watch the Blue Geranium or Chimneys yet, maybe later this week, but I loved The Mirror Crack'd last night - I thought it one of the best in a long time. To be honest I no longer get hot under the collar about adaptations with Miss Marple that she's not supposed to be in. I just try and enjoy them for what they are. I hope never to see Sittaford and Pricking again, but have to admit I really enjoyed Towards Zero, Evans, Murder is Easy and the Pale Horse.

I think a lot of people are going to be really happy with The Clocks -it's turned a rather rambling book into a tight and entertaining film, it's an old fashioned Poirot that really works, shame they didn't have the foresight to bring Miss Lemon back just for this one episode.

MissQuin-avatar
MissQuin 03 Jan 11 at 5:09 p.m. GMT

There are some of the recent adapts that Ive enjoyed. But in some cases long books have been trimmed down so that characters come across as two dimensional (Ordeal By Innocene, Murder Is Easy).

That's because Miss Marple has an stereotyped image known to non AC readers. Producers must be feeling they must stick to it- Murder In Quaint Cosy Villages, lot's of eccentric characters, a bevy of affairs and perhaps a few tweed clad people. Then at the end the suspects must be gathered in the room, whilst Miss Marple (knitting) solves the whole thing. This just doesn't happen in each Miss Marple book.

But when they film a book unlike in that style, then they edit the story so it fits. Ive not watched Chimneys yet but it seems like they may have done so there. They did this to Murder Is Easy- so that a creepy Gothic mystery with unconvential Characters like Mr Ellsworthy were cut out. Then they morphed into what people expect to find in Miss Marple stories.

I loathe Murder Is easy with Marple. I mean I do like Julia McKenzie, she makes a lovely Miss marple. But the episode was like a soap opera. Any of the tense mystery had been dispersed and replaced with bad melodrama. Towards Zero, Pricking Of My Thumbs are dull too.

That is one thing I noticed about these new Miss Marple adaptations: bad melodrama. Actually there is too much melodrama and it doesn't look too well on film either. And when there is too much melodrama, it results in bad acting. I prefer the Joan Hickson Miss Marple films. The characters in those films acted like how people acted in those times and the acting is much better and more convincing, and it wasn't focusing on being melodramatic but focused on being faithful to the stories, allowing A.C.'s plots to shine through.

Tommy_A_Jones-avatar

I agree Love Mysteries and Miss Quin, It's a shame they made a Hash of Murder is Easy because it could have really worked with Miss Marple.

MissQuin-avatar
MissQuin 03 Jan 11 at 4:48 p.m. GMT

I agree I mean when I heard about Pale horse I was jsut bewildered. It actually turned out to be a good episode. Although it's best to read the book. These adapts are surely aimed at people who never read the books? if so, why not!

I'd rather read a Miss Marple than watch it on TV. But I always give the adapts a try. I like to keep an open mind before watching each one. I'm not swayed by anyone elses judgement.

I remember hearing that Agatha Christie thought about placing Miss Marple in Death On The Nile but she changed her mind and decided to put Poirot in the book instead. Now whatever choice Agatha makes in whether putting Poirot or Miss Marple in her books is her choice. When she made the Poirot book The Hollow into a play she took Poirot out. I think only she is the right person to make those choices, not these producers who are adapting her stories onto film. They need to stick to what Agatha wrote--she knew what she was doing when she wrote these books.

MissQuin-avatar
MissQuin 03 Jan 11 at 4:38 p.m. GMT

I agree Loves M There are some pretty odd casting choices in recent episodes. It's like they write the scripts around they people they choose.

On the other hand In Ordeal By Innocence I though the actors they chose were excellent. Really of the highest standard and just right for the parts. It got off to a really engrossing start. But sadly I didn't enjoy the rest of the episode. Once Miss Marple came along (McEwan) and started picking locks and giggling I just wanted to shout at the TV. It would have been brilliant without Miss Marple.

Some of the Non-series books that I would like never to have Miss Marple in have already been done like By The Pricking of My Thumbs, The Secret of Chimneys and Why Didn't They Ask Evans There |are some I wish they would put Miss Marple in like Sparkling Cyanide, Endless Night and Death Comes As The End because I found this books hard and Miss Marple would put life into them but I realise putting her in Death Comes As Thge End would be absurd so don't hold out any hope for her to be in that one.

But I think that if the producers trusted in the material and made a high-quality script and was more careful in the choice of actors/actresses to put in the films, I think these non-series stories can stand on their own. I think they made a huge mistake with By The Pricking Of My Thumbs. I wish they got Francesca Annis and James Warwick to return to their roles as T&T and film that and the other 2 books from the series N or M? and Postern Of Fate.

There are some Chrisite non serires books that I hope they NEVER make into Marple adapts:

1.) Then There Were None- It would ruin the entire story. Enough said.

2.) The Mysterious Mr Quin (& Miss Marple) The idea of Miss marple replacing Mr Sattersthwaite scares me. If it happened I could go into a bezerker like state  I'd be v annoyed.

3.) Death Comes As The End- with Miss Marple, knitting under the hot sun.  It would be just... beyond words. Terrible springs to mind, plus some other choice phrases. Thankfully, I'm sure ITV doesn't have the budget for such an epic Ancient Egyptian adventure.

For me the only Miss Marple in a non serires book that has worked for me is The Pale Horse. The others ( murder Is Easy was diabolical for me to watch) have been badly flawed. Normally because the real sleuth has to take a backseat while Miss Marple takes on their role. Then that character becomes an aimless spare part.

I said last year they only put Miss M into them because the name is like a franchise. If they had ordeal By Innocence filmed then they hope to get more ratings by adding Miss Marple. Some of the adapts (Sittaford Mystery) have seemed like a a pointless Celebrity endorsing a product that they couldn't care less about.

I understand what you saying in regards to pushing MM into any old Christie story but at the same time I have found that this has introduced me to Christie books I never really considered reading before. A few years back I enjoyed the Sittaford Mystery so much that I decided I'd read the book. Only then did I found out how creative they'd been with the story but at the same time I had read a great story that otherwise I might not have.

In the end I think it comes down to keeping things fresh and introducing new possibilities. I know I have been enjoying the most recent series and thought Chimmnies (SP?) was a brilliant episode. Can't wait for the new episode tonight!

I just don't see the need to put Miss Marple into stories that she never appeared in. Can't these producers make her stories that doesn't feature Poirot & Miss Marple like Endless Night, The Pale Horse, And Then There Were None, Murder Is Easy, Crooked House, etc? It's almost as if they don't believe these stories can stand on their own if they are filmed. There is more to Agatha Christie than Poirot and Miss Marple. Sure these are 2 of her most popular characters and is what made her so famous but there are many great non-series Agatha Christie books out there that should be filmed without sticking Miss Marple into them.

Agatha Christie's stories are already fresh and they don't need to be tremendously changed. To me it's as if it's being said that she is not relevant for the 21st century. These films that shoehorn Miss Marple in are totally different from what Agatha Christie wrote. How about these producers just trust in the material?

To extend the series of course. No other reason. Mackenzie signed on for three series, and by gum, they'll milk it for all it's worth!

Pardon me if I sound overly cynical, but can you think of a better reason for shoehorning MM into other tales? Surely not to preserve artistic merit or anything of the sort, because they would've been adapted more respectfully.

Still, it's an entertaining series, and The Blue Geranium proves that they could've expanded MM short tales instead of shoving her into stories she had no right to get caught up in in the first place.

johnwaynefreak-avatar
johnwaynefreak 17 Dec 10 at 11:23 p.m. GMT

Oh no, I see what you both mean but my complaint was why was it necessary to have Miss Marple in it at all when the book worked perfectly well with just Ariadne Oliver? Surely the Agatha Christie 'brand' would have sold the episode well enough.

Tommy_A_Jones-avatar
Tommy_A_Jones 16 Dec 10 at 2:43 p.m. GMT

It would have been a nice touch to have Zoe Wanemaker in Pale Horse but they couldn't really for the rewason Miss Quin Gave.

Am I wrong, did John Hannah and Alexander Armstrong both play Inspector Craddock, I know they have the rule that people can't be in more than 1 Episode of Marple apart from Julia McKenzie and when we see The Mirror Crack'd Joanna Lumley but I did think it odd Craddock isn't always played by the same Actor.

MissQuin-avatar
MissQuin 16 Dec 10 at 1:46 p.m. GMT

It was becasue Zoe Wannamaker has already appeared in Marple serries as Leticia Blacklock in Murder Is Announced. I thought Pale horse was very good, one of the best Marple episodes.

johnwaynefreak-avatar
johnwaynefreak 16 Dec 10 at 1:30 p.m. GMT

I felt it was a real kick in the teeth for Zoë Wanamaker when they booted the Ariadne character out and shoehorned Marple in - "The Pale Horse" would have worked perfectly well as a one-off episode, maybe tailing at the end of a series of 4 Suchet "Poirot"s.

But then it's been ages since we had a 'proper' series with a regular slot; hopefully, ITV's forthcoming Christmas Christie extravaganza will make up for this to some viewers.

Tommy_A_Jones-avatar
Tommy_A_Jones 15 Dec 10 at 4:34 p.m. GMT

ITV obviously want tro keep the Series going and are scrabbling around to think of as many Non-series Books which they think could have Miss Marple in, They obviously have no faith in them being done properly which I think would have been good and they have taken the decission not to create new stories for the \chasracter which in my view would be much better than putting her in Non-series books.

The Mirror Crack'd is being shown in the uk on Sun 2nd Jan, meaning there are 3 Marple episodes being shown within a week!

The Clocks and Why Didn't They Ask Evans are both included in the ITV press pack for winter prgramming, so should be shown early on in 2011.

No idea why Evans has been held back for so long, it was released on dvd in the UK several months ago. The Clocks is being released on dvd too in Jan, before it has been transmitted in the uk.

Mon 27th Dec - The Secret of Chimneys

The Mirror Crack'd from Side to Side is being shown the first week of January (date to be confirmed).

Once all these have been shown, the only ones which have already been made still to be transmitted in the UK are The Clocks and Why Didn't They Ask Evans.
